A free breakfast sounds simple, and it is, but people still tell us they drove past three times before coming in. Nobody ever tells you what the room is actually like.
It is a room with food in it
There is a cooked breakfast. You sit down and eat it. Nobody gives a speech, nobody asks you to sign anything, and nobody puts you on a list.
Who comes
People on their own, families, older people who want the company more than the food, people between jobs, people who are doing fine this month and were not doing fine last month. There is no type.
Do you have to talk to anyone?
No. Some people come in, eat, read the paper and leave. Others stay for two hours. Both are normal.
That said, the people in the room usually know the local services well, and if you want to ask about housing, bills, a support service or anything else, you can. Advice and referrals are part of why the breakfast exists, but they are on offer rather than compulsory.
When it is on
The current day and time are on the community breakfast page. If you want to check before you travel, ring the centre on 02 9603 2500.
If food is the main thing you need rather than the morning itself, have a look at food relief as well.
