Accessibility

This centre is for everyone in South West Sydney, and that has to include people who use the web differently. This page says what we have done, what we know is not right yet, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.

What we are aiming for

We are working to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That is the standard Australian government services are measured against.

What we have done

  • Colour contrast is measured, not guessed. Our brand orange and blue are both too light to sit on white as body text, so we do not use them that way. Text colours are checked against the background they actually appear on.
  • The site works without a mouse. You can reach the navigation, the program filters and the enquiry form using the keyboard alone, and there is a skip link to jump straight to the main content.
  • Headings are in a real order, so a screen reader can move through a page by structure rather than guesswork.
  • Images carry text descriptions, and decorative images are marked as decorative so they are not read out for no reason.
  • The site works at large text sizes and on a phone, and it does not require you to turn your phone sideways.
  • Movement is kept down. If your device is set to reduce motion, the counters and transitions on this site stop animating.
  • Program days and times are written in plain words rather than a format you have to decode.

What is not right yet

We would rather tell you this than let you find it.

  • Our older news posts came across from the previous version of this site. Some of their images have thin or missing descriptions.
  • The enquiry form is provided by a third party. We have styled it to match the rest of the site, but we do not control every part of how it behaves with assistive technology.
  • The map is Google’s. We do not load it unless you ask for it, and we always give the address as text and a directions link, so you never have to use the map itself.
  • We have not finished testing with every screen reader. Automated checking only catches part of the picture, and the rest takes time we are still putting in.

If something is in your way

Tell us and we will fix it, and in the meantime we will get you the information another way. You do not need to know the technical words for what went wrong. “I could not read the program times” is enough.

Everything on this website is also available by ringing the centre or coming in. If you would like program details read to you, posted out, or explained with an interpreter present, ask us and we will arrange it.
